Proclamation

WHEREAS, the proper collection and disposal of waste and recycling are important to reducing litter, eliminating dump heaps, and preventing disease; and

WHEREAS, effective garbage disposal and higher public sanitation standards has led to the eradication of many diseases; and

WHEREAS, Chicago’s sanitation workers play a vital role in keeping our streets safe and clean for our residents, businesses and communities; and

WHEREAS, in June of 2012, National Garbage Man Day was celebrated to honor the people responsible for keeping our streets clean and in 2020 this day was expanded to a week and renamed Waste and Recycling workers week; and

WHEREAS, June 12-17, 2022 has been designated as Waste and Recycling Workers Week and will be celebrated by recognizing companies that work to make a difference, highflying exceptional workers, and encouraging people to acknowledge and thank their local sanitation workers:

NOW THEREFORE, I, LORI E LIGHTFOOT, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF CHICAGO, do hereby proclaim June 12-19, 2022 to be WASTE AND RECYCLING WORKERS WEEK IN CHICAGO in recognition of the important work done by waste and recycling wokers and encourage all residents to support and acknowledge these hardworking men and women.
